This Sunday marks a significant event as former President Donald Trump visits the Rio Grande Valley, a key area in Texas. The visit, rich in political and social implications, is set against the backdrop of the ongoing Operation Lone Star and the looming 2024 presidential campaign.

Trump’s visit is primarily to honor law enforcement and military personnel involved in Operation Lone Star, a multi-billion dollar initiative launched by Texas Governor Greg Abbott in 2021. This operation is a direct response to what Abbott and his supporters see as inadequate federal policies on immigration under the Biden administration.

Endorsement and Political Implications

A pivotal moment of this visit is expected to be Governor Abbott’s endorsement of Trump for the 2024 presidential race. This endorsement, if it occurs as anticipated, will be a significant boost for Trump’s campaign, solidifying his support base in a crucial state like Texas.

Adrienne Peña-Garza, the Hidalgo County GOP Chair, expressed enthusiasm about the visit, noting, “It’s a wonderful opportunity during the Thanksgiving holidays to give back to local law enforcement, DPS, National Guard, and just show some thanks for the work they do on the southern US border. We’re here on the frontlines.”

In contrast, Richard Gonzales, the Hidalgo County Democratic Chairman, offered a different perspective, stating, “I find it very curious that we haven’t seen or heard from him in a while and yet he never shies away from a photo-op with a governor to make it sound like something it’s not.”

Ahead of the visit, a poll by CWS Research/Defend Texas Liberty shows Trump leading significantly in Texas, with 58% support. This is a notable 47-point lead over other potential candidates like former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Trump Event Details and Logistics

The event will take place in Edinburg, at the South Texas International Airport. Trump, along with Governor Abbott, is expected to serve Thanksgiving meals to Texas Guard soldiers, DPS troopers, and others involved in Operation Lone Star.

This visit comes at a time when immigration and border security are hot-button issues in American politics. Trump’s presence in the Rio Grande Valley, a region that has seen a political shift in recent years, underscores the ongoing debate over national policies and their local impact.

As the Texas Primary approaches on March 5th, this visit by former President Trump, coupled with the expected endorsement from Governor Abbott, signals a significant moment in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential race. It highlights the ongoing political and social dynamics at play in Texas and the nation at large.
