A recent poll from ABC News/Washington Post reveals a potentially alarming scenario for President Joe Biden’s 2024 re-election campaign. The ABC/WaPo Poll indicates that former President Donald Trump is leading Biden by a significant margin, raising questions about the incumbent’s political viability. The poll, conducted from September 15-20, shows former President Donald Trump leading Biden by a significant 10-point margin.
Trump is Leading in Latest Abc/wapo Poll
“Head-to-head in a hypothetical November 2024 matchup, Trump has 51% support while Biden has 42%,” ABC News reported. This marks a 3-point increase for Trump and a 2-point decrease for Biden compared to a similar poll conducted in February.
“These numbers are simply staggering for the sitting President,” said ABC political director Rick Klein.
Despite the concerning numbers, Biden’s advisers maintain that he is the strongest Democratic contender for 2024. “There is no consensus among those who wish for someone else,” they argue. However, the 10-point gap between Biden and Trump in the poll could be a wake-up call for the Democratic Party.
In the Republican corner, Trump’s numbers are robust, even as he faces multiple criminal charges. He is favored by 54% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis trails far behind at 15%, and no other Republican candidate reaches double digits.
The poll also delves into demographic details, revealing that Trump leads Biden by 13 points among independents and by six points among Hispanics. Astonishingly, Trump also leads Biden by 20 points among voters under age 35.
The Washington Post, however, cautioned against reading too much into these numbers. “The sizable margin of Trump’s lead in this survey is significantly at odds with other public polls,” they noted, suggesting that the poll might be an outlier.
The poll was conducted from September 15-20, with a random national sample of 1,006 U.S. adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
“It’s not just the state of the nation or the policies that are giving people pause on President Biden. It seems to be the man himself,” noted co-moderator Martha Raddatz. Concerns about Biden’s age were echoed by 74% of Americans, compared to 50% for Trump.
Democratic pollsters Douglas Schoen and Carly Cooperman stated, “The country’s frustration with inflation and wariness toward the idea of Vice President Kamala Harris being an 80-year-old’s heartbeat from the presidency are two of the many drags on President Biden’s reelection chances.”
The ABC News/Washington Post poll serves as a critical indicator of the challenges facing Biden’s re-election campaign. While some may argue that the poll is an outlier, the numbers are too significant to ignore. Both parties will need to consider these findings carefully as they prepare for the 2024 presidential election, which is shaping up to be a highly contentious battle.
